   ALTON - Former Laclede Steel employees, Melvin Cook and his son, Mike, and a group of local investors have come together to revive an area of the community that many thought had seen its last days of productivity as a producer of steel.
   The newly formed company, Alton Steel Inc. will bring back to life an otherwise blighted 400-acre site along Broadway in Alton.
   D. Jeannine Kelly, environmental attorney and an investor in the newly formed company, said the group is paying $1 million for the property but the funds will be put into a trust fund to assist in environmental cleanup identified by the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency.

New softball stadium recognizes women's sports advocate

   CARBONDALE - Southern Illinois University Carbondale is now sporting a new women's softball stadium, named for Charlotte West, a woman of national acclaim in the field of women's sports.

   FAIRVIEW HEIGHTS - A "fountain" of water spouting from the hose of a Fairview Heights Fire Department truck signified the start of construction of the first office building at the Fountains at Fairview, a mixed-used development in Southwestern Illinois.
